Review: Throne of Glass - Sarah J. Maas

Author: Sarah J. Maas
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Release Date: August 2nd 2012
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Pages: 404

Meet Celaena Sardothien.
Beautiful. Deadly. Destined for greatness.

In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.

Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted?

This is the best high fantasy I've read since Daughter of Smoke and Bone last year. It's got everything I want in a book - non-stop action, a kick-ass female assassin(!),  an electric romance, imaginative storytelling and two super swoonworthy guys! I couldn't put this book down! Totally made my day when I woke up in the morning and found out I got approved on Netgalley for this! I read this in a day, and am now anxiously awaiting the sequel!

If you haven't already read ToG, I suggest you read the four prequel novellas first. You don't have to, but it would be great to have that understanding and so you wouldn't be as confused as to why she was in that situation at the beginning of this book.

Celaena is the main reason why I'm obsessed with this series already. I can't even say a bad thing about her. NOTHING. And you guys know how picky I am of my female protagonists. Celaena is my favourite of them all. She's fearless, deadly, kind and acts like a girl. She obsesses over pretty things like clothes, gowns, makeup etc. And you know what? She knows and acknowledges that she's pretty. Beautiful, even. Not like those whiny brats I keep reading about that goes 'oh I'm so ugly blah blah blah I'm so ordinary blah blah blah'. Argh. Stop and just shut up. That is one of my book pet peeves ever. And I'm so glad that Celaena is different and she even uses her beauty to her advantage. I just love this girl. BUT. That's not to say she isn't flawed. She is.  She's realistically flawed and makes mistakes like every other normal being out there. But the difference is that she turns it around, and tries to figure out how to undo it.

The plot was also a breath of fresh air. I thought it was very original, highly creative and the world-building was just amazing. Sarah's writing was phenomenal as always, and how she describes the setting it feels like you were really there with Celaena. At first I was a bit reluctant when I heard of this book since it's high fantasy, and I've read a lot of fantasy but most of them disappointed me. Not this one. This just exceeded all my expectations! The interesting and unique cast of characters and the fantasy elements will make you fall in love with Sarah's debut!

The love triangle. This is probably the hardest one for me. Uhhh the charming prince, or the gruff Captain of the Royal Guard?? Who to pick?  I kept going back and forth between these two equally amazing guys! SO HOT! Also, shit is about to hit the fan since the two guys are best friends.  But I'm not sure it will stay like that for long though ;). I love Celaena and I'll be happy with whoever she chooses in the end. But I gotta say I love Chaol a tiny bit more ;)

Guys, if you're in a reading slump or something, and you're looking for a read that's fast-paced, riveting and downright addictive with a strong female assassin, well I suggest pre-ordering Throne of Glass right now. NOW.

And this is probably my favourite girl-on-the-cover ever! Much MUCH better than the US one. To be honest I think the US cover does nothing to show it's amazingness inside. If I hadn't already read this before the cover was revealed, and I've seen the US cover, I probably wouldn't even read it. True. I just LOVE this UK one. And have you seen the back cover? It's Celaena in a dress. WIN. I can't wait to get my copy. I've already pre-ordered it (yay thank god I live in England) and already stalking my mailman. Hurry up already.

Blog Tour: A Night of Southern Comfort by Robin Covington (Review)

Author: Robin Covington
Genre: Adult, Contemporary
Release Date: June 15th 2012
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Pages:150

*ADULT*
One night of passion...

Detective Jackson Cantrell never imagined that one night with an irresistible stranger would turn his life upside down. He’s spent years living in the shadows, but Dr. Michaela Roarke awakened a passion inside him he'd buried years ago.

He never expected the woman would turn out to be the governor's daughter...and his next assignment. The governor blackmails Jackson to secretly watch over Michaela and protect her from a stalker, or kiss his dream job at the FBI good-bye. Swearing to keep things strictly professional, Jackson moves in with Michaela. Too bad his heart can't keep the same promise.

But when the stalker's attacks quickly escalate beyond mere photographs to bodily harm, Jackson must race to save Michaela's life. And he’ll have to figure out how to keep her once she discovers his lie.

Look at that cover! Doesn't that make you want to read it? A NIGHT OF SOUTHERN COMFORT blends romance, mystery and a one night stand that turns into something else. Hmm who wouldn't love this book? I certainly did.

The characters were all flawed, but likeable. Even when they do make mistakes and choices, you understand why. All of them were very realistic and believable, which I love. Jackson was super hot! And he's a detective! What more do you want? (You know, if it's not obvious, I kinda have a thing for detectives) and Michaela was such an awesome female lead! I love that she's so intelligent and independent! Definitely would like to see more female leads like her!

There were some very VERY hot and steamy scenes! I admire the author's ability to write some good ole love scenes! I kinda had to fan myself every once in a while! Oh, and did I mention how this book starts? Umm probably the hottest first chapter ever! And how much I love stories that center around one night stands that turn into something else? ;)

I also really liked the mystery aspect of this! It kept me at the edge of my feet and constantly trying to guess, and I was really surpised! Do you know how much I love it when books can surprise me? 'Cause that doesn't happen very often ya know!

All in all, I can't wait for more of this author's books! Surely going to buy and read them! :D

Thank you to Entangled publishing for letting me review this book! :)

LEVEL 2
Level 2 (The Memory Chronicles, #1)
Lenore Appelhans
January 15th 2013

Since her untimely death the day before her eighteenth birthday, Felicia Ward has been trapped in Level 2, a stark white afterlife located between our world and the next. Along with her fellow prisoners, Felicia passes the endless hours downloading memories and mourning what she’s lost—family, friends, and the boy she loved, Neil.

Then a girl in a neighboring chamber disappears, and nobody but Felicia seems to recall she existed in the first place. Something is obviously very wrong. When Julian—a dangerously charming guy Felicia knew in life—comes to offer Felicia a way out, she learns the truth: a rebellion is brewing to overthrow the Morati, the guardians of Level 2.

Felicia is reluctant to trust Julian, but then he promises what she wants the most—to be with Neil again—if only she’ll join the rebels. Suspended between Heaven and Earth, Felicia finds herself in the center of an age-old struggle between good and evil. As memories from her life come back to haunt her, and as the Morati hunt her down, Felicia will discover it’s not just her own redemption at stake… but the salvation of all mankind. Add to Goodreads

Eeeep! Doesn't the summary sounds awesome?!? I am dying for this book! Too bad it's not coming out until next year BOOO!!
Cover thoughts: I used to hate it, but it kinda grew on me. I love the whole sci-fi thing going on! And the way the font and author name is placed = genius!

So what are you waiting for this Wednesday?

Review: Sweet Evil - Wendy Higgins

Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy, #1)Title: Sweet Evil
Author: Wendy Higgins
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
Release Date: May 1st 2012
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 447
Source: Bought

Embrace the Forbidden.

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.

Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness within. It isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

This. THIS book is why I love paranormal. Why it's still my favourite ever genre and why I'm still a bit obsessed with it. This debut by Wendy Higgins is a must read for any YA paranormal fan, and angel stories (a fun, original take, that is!) and if you luuurve British boys. I mean, who doesn't?

The angel/demon aspect is definitely something I haven't read about before, and I thought it was very creative and unique! I love the whole idea of the Seven Sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride) and that each demon is specialized in one of the sins. One of the best scenes was learning more about each Duke and their sons/daughters. I also became invested in  everyone in this book. Anna, Kaidan and all the characters they meet along their journey! Anna's dad too, lol!

Kaidan. SIGH. He's British, plays in a band(!) and oh so sexy! He is probably one of my favourite ever bad boys! Right up there in the top with Daemon, Jace, Patch etc. He's also the son of the Duke of Lust. Major WIN!!! Anyway, his chemistry with Anna was just SO HOT! Guys, if you're like me, and you adore romance in your books, then I think Sweet Evil won't disappoint! Anna the MC was already great, and I love the fact that she's a good girl. Like me! Oh, but one thing I didn't appreciate about her was her crying. It's like she was always crying. Suck it up girl!

The ending was really sad :( because I didn't get what I wanted but I'm hoping the situations will get better in the sequel! THERE HAS TO BE A SEQUEL. PLEASE!

Oh and can I just say I love the cover? I love how it highlights the dark and the light feel of the book! I couldn't imagine a more perfect cover than this one!

This is definitely one of my favourite debuts of 2012, and I am begging the publishers to publish the sequel! I love love love this!!

Review: My Life Next Door - Huntley Fitzpatrick

Author: Huntley Fitzpatrick
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Release Date: June 14th 2012
Publisher: Dial Books for Young Readers
Pages: 395
Source: Bought

A gorgeous debut about family, friendship, first romance, and how to be true to one person you love without betraying another

“One thing my mother never knew, and would disapprove of most of all, was that I watched the Garretts. All the time.”

The Garretts are everything the Reeds are not. Loud, numerous, messy, affectionate. And every day from her balcony perch, seventeen-year-old Samantha Reed wishes she was one of them . . . until one summer evening, Jase Garrett climbs her terrace and changes everything. As the two fall fiercely in love, Jase's family makes Samantha one of their own. Then in an instant, the bottom drops out of her world and she is suddenly faced with an impossible decision. Which perfect family will save her? Or is it time she saved herself?

A dreamy summer read, full of characters who stay with you long after the story is over.
I have to tell you guys, if you're planning to go to the beach and read, then this is the perfect book to bring. It took me less than a day to finish, while me and my family was on the beach last week I was reading this and couldn't put it down, even though my 5 year old brother was throwing sand at me (eww!). It was just that good. And so worth the sand in my hair lol.

I just love ALL of the characters. Well, except the mum and Samantha's best friend.  I kinda want to slap them both by the end. Anyway, let's talk about the Garretts. Sigh. What I would give to have a big big big family like theirs! I just loved each and every one of the Garretts. Even Mrs, Mr and all their children! They have 8(!!) kids but each one of them all had very distinct personalities and quirks that I loved! Especially George - he was one hilarious kid!

The relationship between Jase (I love this name! Jase Jace Jase Jace!) and Samantha was just so sweet and ADORABLE. You can't help but root for them. Also, this book was hilarious. I was laughing out loud at lots of parts/scenes. Especially the sex talk scene with Jase and his dad. I could have died laughing then.

The plot may seem simple to some people, but not me! I couldn't stop reading and couldn't put this baby down! The writing was amazing - very simple, and readable but also unique and one that's not very common in YA, or in writing in general.

The ending/climax to the ending was very intense. Or maybe that was just me. But with this book, I didn't know what the ending would be, it's quite unpredictable and full of surprises in terms of characters (what happens to them in the end - the development of the characters from the beginning to the end is just awesome!). All in all, the ending was perfect for this book, and doesn't deserve any less.

All in all, I look forward to whatever this author writes, and will definitely buy and read her next book! Anyway, MY LIFE NEXT DOOR is perfect for the beach and summer!

New blog look! (and umm..Greek Mythology)

Hey guys!

SO. My blog got a make-over! Isn't it gorgeous?! I love it so much. It was designed by the amazing and super-talented Katie from Sophistikatied and K.D. Designs. If you guys are in need of any design, she's the girl to ask!

Anyway, here's some 'facts' about my new blog design:
- It's purple because that's my favourite colour. Hmm. Maybe.
- It's got a goddess 'cause I *am* a goddess. Hee hee.
- My favourite bit is the swirly thingy coming out of the book and the goddess. :)
- AND, you might have noticed that it's got a greek influence. with the pattern thingy, the font etc. That's because I'm a huge fan of Greek Mythology. And I know and read only a few on them in YA.

SO HERE'S MY YA BOOKS with Greek Mythology/Retellings

Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I think everyone have heard of this series. I love this. It's probably my favourite series of all time (it's a toss up between Lux and this) after reading the third book Deity. There will be 7 total (5 books, 2 novellas). Here they are in order = Daimon (prequel novella), Half-Blood, Pure (my review), Deity (review coming Nov. 1st), Elixir (Aiden POV novella), Apollyon, and Sentinel. Don't you just love the covers, too? If you like strong heroines, heavy romance *swoon* and greek myths - then you'll devour the Covenant series.

Abandon trilogy by Meg Cabot. I haven't started on this series yet, but I've got the first book Abandon on my shelf. I tried to read 100 pages of it but I didn't like the writing/characters. I *might* pick it up soon. Or maybe not. I've heard some very mix reviews for this series so I'm not sure. But the summary looked awesome (SHAME) and it's a retelling of the Underworld.

Everneath trilogy by Brodi Ashton. I'm not sure if this series counts, but it does have the Underworld in it. I HAVE read Everneath and really liked it ( read my review). And I'm really anticipating the sequel Everbound. Gosh both dresses on the cover SO SO PRETTY. I want. Also it's got a love triangle (but one of them's a dickhead) and I'm in love with Jack. The main character Nikki is a bit annoying but not overly so that I couldn't read on.

So guys, that's it. I really don't know that many YA books with greek mythology/retellings. If you know any more (and want me to add it to this blog post), just let me know in the comments! :D I would really appreciate it. In the meantime, I'll tell you who my favourite goddess is =  it's Artemis! The goddess of the hunt and wilderness (among other things). She's my favourite coz she can kick ass AND carries a bow and arrow. WIN.

Waiting On Wednesday (18)

LET THE SKY FALL
Let the Sky Fall

Shannon Messenger
March 15th 2013

SUMMARY:
Vane Weston should have died in the category five tornado that killed his parents. Instead, he woke up in a pile of rubble with no memories of his past—except one: a beautiful, dark-haired girl standing in the winds. She's swept through his dreams ever since, and he clings to the hope that she's real.

Audra is real, but she isn't human. She's a sylph, an air elemental who can walk on the wind, translate its alluring songs, even twist it into a weapon. She's also a guardian—Vane’s guardian—and has sworn an oath to protect him at all costs.

When a hasty mistake reveals their location to the enemy who murdered both of their families, Audra has just days to help Vane unlock his memories. And as the storm winds gather, they start to realize the greatest danger might not be the warriors coming to destroy them, but the forbidden romance growing between them.

Set amongst the desert airstreams of Coachella Valley in California, LET THE SKY FALL is about two teenagers broken by their pasts, divided by their futures, and bound by love.

The cover drew me in. The summary made me fall in love. I so can't wait for this book to come out, but until then I'll make sure I get an ARC or something :) This is so random but I like both main characters' names Vane and Audra. I give props to authors who use quite unique (if not unique, then a name that's not common in YA or any other book) names for their protagonists. I'm so tired of Kates and Annas and blah blah blah. Also I like the idea of the girl being the supernatural freak and being the one saying the guy. Why can't it be March 2013 already?? Too long *pouts*

Cover thoughts: I adore everything about this cover. The colours (it's not used very often in YA novels), the way the font is placed, the couple holding each other (so sweet!) and how it's so clean and not too over the top like others. It kinda reminds me of the cover of Michelle Hodkin's The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, in a good way - I love both! :)

So what are you waiting for this Wednesday?

Review: My Soul To Take - Rachel Vincent

Author: Rachel Vincent
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
Release Date: January 1st 2011
Publisher: Mira Books
Pages: 368
Source: Bought

She doesn’t see dead people, but...

She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who’ll be next...

I've heard so much about this series, mostly good things which was why I was a bit reluctant to read it - I was a little scared WHAT IF I DIDN'T LIKE IT??. But when Kay (from K-Books) kept on gushing about it, I knew I had to read it lol. We have a lot of the same book tastes. So I went and got myself the first 3 books of the series. Using my dad's money. Sorry, Dad.

Anyway, the story about banshees or a bean sidhe was something that I've never read about before. I thought it was fairly original and such a fun take on it. It's got action, mystery, high school drama, and your typical mean cheerleader and a love triangle between two sexy guys -  what more do you want? Oh and one thing that I noticed is that it reads more like for younger YA audience. I'm not sure if it's because of the writing, or the romance or the story itself but it just does. *shrugs*. Now that doesn't necessarily mean it's a negative thing, it's just a bit of a let-down if you're a romance sexy addict like me :P.

The main character Kaylee was alright, I guess. She wasn't my favourite and there's really nothing about her that stands out. Her looks, her personality, her everything just kinda blends in the background. She's just nothing special. But at least she wasn't one of those whiny or stupid female protagonists that I read a lot about in YA (or even in Adult). Nash was the perfect guy but I didn't fall in love with him like I was hoping. :( Tod was definitely my favourite character. He's just so funny, sarcastic, and has a serious bad-ass job. I loved him. The rest of the characters were really well-rounded and all had different personalities. Hurray for parents! Yay! I love it when the parents are actually involved in the plot.

In other circumstances I would have put this book down (blame Kaylee), but the mystery aspect of it was what I was really hooked on and couldn't stop reading. The conclusion and ending was a big shock for me and I loved that I didn't figure it out! I always hate it when I figure things out too easily. The writing was also quite addictive and I applaud Rachel Vincent's talent.

Because this is just the first book and the sixth book just came out, I kinda already know more or less what happens in the rest of this series. I'm still going to read them, but I don't expect to be surprised anymore.
