Waiting On Wednesday (39)

NOT A DROP TO DRINK

Mindy McGinnis

SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2013
Regret was for people with nothing to defend, people who had no water.
Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn't leave at all.

Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.

But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….

With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, debut author Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a barren world not so different than our own.

Can someone pretty please gimme this book NOW?!? I am absolutely dying to get my hands on this! It sounds frigging AMAZING. It's got a bad-ass chick, epic post-apocalyptic setting and OMG I read the query of this (at the YA Highway) and I just can't even. Too much awesome for me to handle!
Cover Thoughts:

When this cover was revealed like last week, I totally flipped out. Guys, it's one of my favourite covers ever. I love the whole contrast on the background and the dramatic skies and how the typography reflects the pond. Oh yes, it's got THE pond that it mentions on the summary. I love covers that give a little insight on the actual story inside and this cover looks exactly that. Oh, and hi kick-ass heroine on the roof!! *waves*
So what do YOU think of my pick this week? And what are YOU waiting for this Wednesday? :)

Blog Tour: The Nightmare Affair - Mindee Arnett (Review and Giveaway)

The Nightmare Affair (The Arkwell Academy, #1)

Title: The Nightmare Affair (The Arkwell Academy #1)
Author: Mindee Arnett
Release Date: March 5th, 2013
Publisher:  Tor Teen
Genres: YA, Paranormal
Pages: 367
Source: For review/blog tour

Sixteen-year-old Dusty Everhart breaks into houses late at night, but not because she’s a criminal. No, she’s a Nightmare.

Literally.

Being the only Nightmare at Arkwell Academy, a boarding school for magickind, and living in the shadow of her mother’s infamy, is hard enough. But when Dusty sneaks into Eli Booker’s house, things get a whole lot more complicated. He’s hot, which means sitting on his chest and invading his dreams couldn’t get much more embarrassing. But it does. Eli is dreaming of a murder.

Then Eli’s dream comes true.

Now Dusty has to follow the clues—both within Eli’s dreams and out of them—to stop the killer before more people turn up dead. And before the killer learns what she’s up to and marks her as the next target.

THE NIGHTMARE AFFAIR was one of my most anticipated debut paranormals of 2013 and I was dying to get my hands on it. While it wasn't quite what I expected or hoped, it was a still very fun and humorous read that I think a lot of YA paranormal fans would really enjoy!

Okay first, I really just want to say bravo to Mindee Arnett because seriously, the idea that the main protag is literally a Nightmare? Pretty genious, if you ask me. I thought this idea was very unique and just creative! I was thinking, why hasn't this been done before? LOL. But yeah I loved it and it's one of my favourite parts of the book because this whole Nightmare thing kinda sets it apart from other YA books out there. (I might be wrong and there might be a book with a Nightmare or something like that, but with me, it's the first I've read :) )

Dusty, the main character kinda reminded me of the protagonist in Paranormalcy series (Kiersten White), in a good way obviously! Their personalities are quite similar. Dusty is just hilarious and quite simply, lovable and so easy to relate to.

I loved Dusty's best friend (she rocks) and I think my favourite character who really, really intrigued me was Dusty's mum. It seems like she's such a multi-layered character with full of juicy secrets that we just don't know yet. I'd love to know more about her. Even though she's kinda a rubbish mother to Dusty, she does love her.

Eli was the main love interest for Dusty (I'd get on that in a minute) and while I still liked him enough, I feel like he should have been a bit more developed and dare I say it, more swoon-worthy. Also, I needed more of their chemistry. GIVE ME IT, GUYS!

There's a bit of love triangle in this book (yawn!), but is it really a love triangle if it's painfully obvious who's she going to end up with? I hated Paul. I liked Eli. End of story.

While the first half was kinda slow, the second half totally makes up for that fact and then the real action and suspense begins. Some relevations truly did surprise me while some I guessed correctly 100 pages ago. Still, it was very fun to find out whether my guesses were right and when I had it sooo wrong, I was like WHATTT??

One of the other things I loved? The setting! Oh my gosh, I want to hug the author for the boarding school setting! Who here wants more boarding school setting in books? *raises hand* ME!!

Even though I didn't meet a book boyfriend in this book or not a five-goddess rating, I still think THE NIGHTMARE AFFAIR is definitely worth a read and it's one of those books that will make you happy happy happy after you've finished and put it down. :)

Blog Tour: Game For Marriage - Karen Erickson (Review)

Game for Marriage (Game for It, #1)Title: Game For Marriage (Game For It #1)
Author: Karen Erickson
Release Date: January 11th, 2013
Publisher:  Entangled (Brazen)
Genres: Adult, Contemporary Romance
Pages: 170
Source: For review/blog tour

He’s going in deep to make her his…

Struggling artist Sheridan Harper never imagined she’d spend a sizzling night with Jared Quinn, the smoking-hot star quarterback of her local professional football team, the San Jose Hawks. And she’s even more shocked when Jared’s publicist offers her a proposition: a fake marriage to keep Jared out of the gossip mags. Being that close to Jared would be too tempting, so to protect her heart, she insists on secretly including a clause forbidding sex between them.

Jared just wants to keep his starting QB job and keep it in San Jose. His reputation as a ladies’ man has landed him in the headlines one too many times, but there’s something about his kind, passionate new wife that tempts him beyond reason. Any sort of intimacy between them is completely forbidden, but as their bodies fall in deep, will their hearts follow suit?
Like with every Entangled Brazen title that I read, this book is just as amazing and fun and sexy and just everything that you would want in a hot adult contemporary romance!

Even though this is only 170 pages, it still made me fall in love with each of the characters. With that short of a story, you'd think you wouldn't really get to know them as much but this just proved me wrong. I was so invested in the characters and I actually wished it was a lot longer! I didn't want to leave their world. :)

You guys know I just can't resist a professional sportsman! I admit I do have a thing for them and can't get enough of them guys in books but this is even better since Jared is a quarterback. Which means he's sexy and HAWT. Authors take note: put sports in your books. ;)

I absolutely love stories where the main characters' relationship starts out 'fake' at first and then ends up being real and so unexpected and surprising. This is what happens to Jared and Sheridan and I adored reading and seeing them fall in love with each other for real. Sheridan was very funny and likeable and Jared *sigh* What can I say? He's yummy!

I just couldn't put this book down! Read it in one sitting and even then I wanted to slow and devour each page I just couldn't stop. I was so engrossed in their story! Also guys, warning: this book is filled with lots and lots of romance. As in the sexy adult kind. So yeah. *blushes* *grins* Hehe I loved them. ;)

This is such a fun and short read with a surprising depth to it. I absolutely loved reading about Sheridan and Jared and that ending was oh so sweet! If you're looking for the next sexy, unputdownable read, then pick up Game For Marriage. Highly recommended! I think there's a sequel to this (according to Goodreads) and if that's true, then I am so friggin excited for it!!

(Psst. There's no words to describe how much I love Entangled's BRAZEN line. All of their titles released so far from that imprint I just love and love and love. Seriously, guys. READ THEM.)

Publisher:  Penguin UK/Puffin (UK)

In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, the Bloodlines series explores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive—this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.

I agree this series is still not as AH-MAY-ZING as her Vampire Academy series, but it's getting there slowly and surely. The Indigo Spell is not just the most unputdownable of her Bloodlines series, but it's the most sizzling and the most romantic one so far! If I could describe this book with one word, it would be this - SYDRIAN.

I do like Sydney. You may think, so?? Well, I've read a few reviews that has said they didn't like Sydney because she's so boring and passive and what not. Yes, Sydney is the complete opposite of Rose in every way possible but just 'cause she's not kick-ass doesn't mean she's weak. I actually think she's incredibly strong and even though she's got body issues (who doesn't?) and insecurities I think she's incredibly strong emotionally. Not to mention smart and a total nerd! I honestly do like reading about her, but I do admit I miss Rose.

Just when you think you can't possibly love Adrian even more than you did before, he proves you wrong. Seriously guys, he's soooo...charming and cocky and sweet and just everything that you can possibly want! Oh, can I please be Mrs. Adrian Ivashkov?? Pretty please? K thanks.

OH MY GOSH SYDRIAN. THEIR CHEMISTRY, GUYS. OMFG. There was this particular scene that I was like blushing! Whoa, Sydney! LOL! Their banter is just so fun to read about and I love them more and more each book! (A little spoiler: Sydney gets a hickey. I dunno why but I just find that hilarious!!)

The beginning of this book was pretty slow and that's when I was like 'Oh no, this book won't be as good as the previous ones' but then Richelle Mead totally does something that will leave your mouth hanging open AND then smiling stupidly. I was like WHAT?? For once in her VA/Bloodlines books, I DIDN'T guess who was the villain. And the way it was executed and revealed was pretty damn clever! I think this book is probably her most unpredictable book to date. Ha!

I was kinda hoping to see and interact more with our side characters, Eddie, Jill and Angeline but we didn't really. Yes, they were there, but I kinda wanted a bit more from them. I certainly wasn't as invested in them as I were with the original VA gang. *whispers* I never liked Jill. And Angeline really pissed me off in this book. WTH was that!? Sigh.

We get to see our old VA gang early in this book and let me tell you, I was grinning the whole time! God know how much I miss Rose and Dimitri and Lissa (well, not so much her lol) and Christian! And it was very interesting to see how an 'outsider' like Sydney sees them and such. Hopefully we'll get to see them more in future books. :)

Obviously this had to just end in a cliffhanger! I am anxiously waiting for THE FIERY HEART because that means more Sydrian AND we get to read from Adrian's POV! Woot! I am so excited for it *coughSydriancough* and people who have read this already will know why. ;)

Valentine Book Boy Chat: Dante (Day 5)

If you missed the announcement of our (Jessica from Just A Booklover and Me) special Valentine Book Boy Chat and don't know what the hell this is, please click here!

Schedule:
Monday - Dean (Dracian Legacy)
Tuesday - Daniel (Touched)
Wednesday - Trevor (Touching The Surface)
Thursday - Kaidan (Sweet Evil/Sweet Peril)
Friday - Dante (The Collector)

FRIDAY: DANTE

Hello, everyone! This is the last day (*sobs*) of the Valentine Book Boy Chat and me and Jessica had lots of fun hosting it! We hope you enjoyed reading the interviews too! :)

Today we have the best of the best, Dante Walker. I've been so lucky to read an e-arc of The Collector early last month and let me tell you guys: it's so worth the wait and deserves all the hype it gets. Dante is just the ultimate bad boy. I love him so much!!!

(Psst. You may have noticed that my questions are similar to what I ask the other boys in this VBBC and that's because I suck at interviews and decided that I would just ask them general V-Day and lovey dovey stuff and I'm so not like Jessica who's questions are far more creative!) :P

We also asked the authors who they see as their guy and V said she always choose Zac Efron as Dante.

Hey, Dante! Welcome back to my blog! I hope you remembered the last time you were here with me! ;)

Oh, I remember you. I’d never forget a sweet face like yours, doll.

*Blushes*. Hehe. Anyway, so first question: Are you looking forward to Valentine's Day? Why or why not?

Yeah, I dig any holiday where a girl is more likely to let me get a little…closer.

What would you give your girl (aka ME!) on Valentine's Day?

I’d give you anything you wanted. You point to it, and my only response will be, “I got you, girl.”

Can I be your girl, Dante? I'm really interested - have you celebrated Valentine's Day before? And how was it?

I, uh…I haven’t. Not that it’s a big deal. I mean, whatev.

What would you and your girl do on V-Day?

We’d go to the mountains. Somewhere cold and secluded so I could have her all alone. Sound ominous? It is.

Book question: If you had to pick another girl from another YA series to date (don't worry I won't be jealous ;P), who would it be and why?

I’d pick Katnis Everdeen, because I could show her a thing or two about relaxing. Girl’s way too wound up.

LOL! But true. And finally, give us your best reason as to why we should read THE COLLECTOR?

Because I’m coming for you one way or another. Might as well know what to expect.

^ Here that, guys? Thanks Dante and hope you stop by soon again! :)

Thank you to author Victoria Scott and Dante for taking part in this Valentine Book Boy Chat!

Camp Boyfriend (Camp Boyfriend, #1)
The summer of her dreams is about to get a reality check.

They said it couldn't be done, but geeky sophomore Lauren Carlson transformed herself into a popular girl after moving to a new school halfway across the country. Amazing what losing her braces and going out for cheerleading will do. Only trouble is, the popular crowd is wearing on Lauren's nerves and she can't wait to return to summer camp where she's valued for her brain instead of her handsprings. She misses her old friends and most of all, her long time camp-only boyfriend, Seth. This year she intends to upgrade their relationship to year-round status once she's broken up with her new, jock boyfriend, Matt. He doesn't even begin to know the real her, a girl fascinated by the night sky who dreams of discovering new planets and galaxies.

But Matt isn't giving her up without a fight. As he makes his case to stay together, Lauren begins to realize his feelings run deeper than she ever would have guessed. What if the guy she thought she was meant to be with forever isn't really The One? Returning to Camp Juniper Point was supposed to ground her uprooted life, but she's more adrift than ever. Everything feels different and soon Lauren's friends are turning on her and both guys question what she really wants. As summer tensions escalate, Lauren wonders if she's changed more than she thought. Will her first big discovery be herself?

THURSDAY: KAIDAN

First, HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYONE! I hope all your boyfriends and husbands and whatever are being all romantic and sweet and all that sappy stuff. Lol, I only have my dad giving me Valentine's Day presents haha! He's been giving my mum presents throughout the whole week. That's what they do after being together since they were both 16. Awwwwww....

*clears throat* Anyway, I am so super duper excited to have Kaidan Rowe (Sweet series by Wendy Higgins) here with me today this Valentine's Day! He's one of my all time favourite characters ever and right there at the top with Daemon and Dante for my Book Boyfriends. He's in a band, guys! And he's so hot and smexy and just ahh! Okay, I'll stop now before I'll go on forever about how much I love Kai! ;P

I love how Wendy even included a special Valentine's Day quote for this special! :) ^^

Jana: Hey, Kai! Welcome to my blog! Just so you know, I can't wait to read more about you and Anna in SWEET PERIL! :)

Anyway, so first question: Are you looking forward to Valentine's Day? Why or why not?

~ From a working standpoint V-day is prime pickings - girls are feeling vulnerable and romantic, but from a personal standpoint it's a bit of a bore.

What would you give your girl on Valentine's Day?

~Whatever she wanted, of course. *winks*

Can I be your girl? Have you celebrated Valentine's Day before? And how was it?

~I've never had a girlfriend, so I've never celebrated in the traditional way that "couples" do. But the single girls are usually scouting for love, or something that can substitute as love for a night.

What's your favourite feature on a girl?

~To be quite honest, I literally love it all. I find things sexy that most blokes don't notice, like the tight line of an achilles tendon, the soft spot behind a knee, and the small cleft between the nose and lip. But the arse holds a torch above it all.

Good answer, LOL!What would you and your girl do on V-Day?

~ Oh, I dunno... ;)

Oh, I think I do know..;) Book question: If you had to pick another girl from another YA series to date (don't worry Anna won't be jealous ;P), who would it be and why?

~Rose from Vampire Academy. There's something hot about a girl who could possibly kick your arse.

I've got a girl crush on Rose, too! And finally, why do you think Anna is really attracted to you? Besides the obvious, that is. ;)

~I've been wondering this myself. I've no clue what she thinks she sees besides a dead sexy git. ha.

Thanks Kaidan and hope you stop by soon again! :)

And because I'm so kind, here's some other photos of Kai (Wade Poezyn)

courtesy of model Wade Poezyn. Also thank you to author Wendy Higgins!
Hellooooo sexy!

Thank you to author Wendy Higgins and Kaidan Rowe for taking part in this Valentine Book Boy Chat! Don't forget, SWEET PERIL comes out April 2013! Oh Jesus I can't wait!
Don't forget to go to Jessica's blog JUST A BOOKLOVER for a different Kai interview! :)
Tomorrow, we will have Dante from The Collector!
