Blog Tour: Conjure - Lea Nolan (Guest Post)

CONJURE by Lea Nolan
~Guest Post
PUBLICATION STORY

Thanks so much for having me here at The Book Goddess. It’s a pleasure to visit with you!

Jana asked me tell you a bit about my publication story and how I came to write CONJURE. It’s an interesting tale, so I’m happy to share it!

I wasn’t always a fiction writer, but I did do quite a bit of writing as a health policy researcher and analyst. I like to say that I wrote hundreds of reports, publications and articles that tens of people enjoyed. But then I started having babies and my priorities shifted and I started to work part-time while I pursued a PhD in public health. Truthfully, after more than 15 years in the business, I was starting to get burned out.

And then I read Twilight. Like so many recent writers, I was inspired by the powerful emotional feelings Stephenie Meyers conveyed in that book. It reminded me of how earth-quaking first love can be and spurred my interest in YA fiction. When I was a teen there was no such “genre” and I ran out of books to read with teen characters by the time I was twelve. So after studying a few YA books, I figured I’d try my hand at writing.

It took me two years to write my first book. Let me explain, I didn’t take me that long to draft. Over those two years, I wrote then completely stripped that manuscript down, changed the tense, restructured scenes, etc. In total, it was reworked six times before it was good enough to query agents. Then I had to perfect my query letter which was even more difficult. I can’t tell you how many embarrassingly bad queries I sent out. But after taking a couple great query classes and running it by some fantastic betas, I finally had one that worked. I started getting responses from agents and request for partials and fulls. One of those agents asked to see what else I had. Luckily, I had the first 50 pages of what became CONJURE so I sent them off. Forty-five minutes later she offered representation, not for that first (still unpublished) book but for the partial. I still had to finish drafting the book and revising it which took several more months. About three years after I’d first started writing, we went on submission.

And that’s when things got interesting. CONJURE features a hidden 18th-century pirate treasure, demon dogs, soul snatching, and a wicked flesh-eating curse that can only be broken with Gullah hoodoo magic. There’s lots of action and adventure and there’s also a sweet romance. Several editors loved the voice and concept but they didn’t exactly know what to do with a story that had the fast-paced adventure usually found in a middle grade book, but also a sweet YA romance between a smart, brave heroine and a hunky hero. Thankfully Liz Pelletier of Entangled Publishing did. “This is a middle grade/YA cross over,” she declared, a book to fit the niche of tweens and younger teen readers who aren’t drawn to the darker/edgier/sexier upper YAs that are on the market. And even better, since the series will get progressively creepy and sinister as it goes on, it will grow with its readers. It was exactly the right way to go. So we aged the characters down a little bit and tweaked their language a smidge but kept everything else exactly as it was and CONJURE was born.

As for how I came to write CONJURE that’s another story all together but it’s a good one because it proves you can find inspiration from anywhere. As bizarre as it sounds, the idea for CONJURE came from a Chick Fil A kids meal bag. We’d just gone through the drive-through and my daughter was reading the little educational factoids they print on the bags. Her little voice floated up from the back seat. “Mommy, did you know pirates used to send messages in a bottle?” No, as a matter of fact, I’d never heard that. As I drove down the road I wondered, why would a pirate need to send a message in a bottle? An answer popped into my head: Maybe his ship and crew were cursed. But what could he have done to land in such trouble? The questions and answers snowballed and before I knew it, I had to set aside the novel I’d been planning to write this one instead.

Thanks again for having me! This was a lot of fun.

~Lea

 About the author!
Believe it or not, I couldn’t read until I was in the thrid grade. After a lot of hard work I finally got the hang of it, and quickly learned the best way to get out of doing chores was to tell my parents I was reading. Soon I was hooked, devouring books by Roald Dal, E.B. White, Judy Blume, C.S. Lewis, and anything I could find with a shiny Newberry Award sticker on the cover. Books provided a portal to enchanted lands where anything was possible and characters relied on their wits to wiggle out of sticky situations. Today, even though I'm all grown up, I write the kinds of stories I sought as a teen -- smart paranormal with bright heroines, crazy-hot heroes, diabolical plot twists, plus a dose of magic, a draft of romance, and a sprinkle of history. I've got an undergraduate degree in history and a master's in public policy and women's studies, which believe it or not help a lot in my fiction writing. I live in Maryland with my heroically supportive husband and three clever children, who’ve figured out how to get out of doing their chores.

Review: Tempting The Player - J. Lynn (Jennifer L. Armentrout)

Tempting the Player (Gamble Brothers, #2)Title: Tempting The Player (Gamble Brothers #2)
Author: J. Lynn (Jennifer L. Armentrout)
Release Date: October 23rd 2012
Publisher: Entangled - Brazen
Genre: Adult, Contemporary

Chad Gamble, all-star pitcher for the Nationals, is one of the best players on—and off—the field. And right now, the notorious bad boy wants Bridget Rodgers. But with her lush curves and snappy comebacks, the feisty redhead is the kind of woman a man wants to settle down with…and that’s the last thing Chad needs.

When the paparazzi catch them in a compromising position, Chad’s manager issues an ultimatum: clean up his act or kiss his multi-million dollar contract goodbye. To save his career, his meddling publicist says he'll have to convince everyone Bridget isn’t just his flavor of the week, but his girlfriend.

Being blackmailed into a fake relationship with Chad Gamble isn’t easy, especially when the sizzling physical attraction between them is undeniable. With a month to go on their arranged pretense, it's going to take every ounce of willpower they have not to fall into bed together...or in love.

I WISH WISH WISH this series would become available in paperback (if not now, later please) because I want to hug and kiss and cuddle and kiss some more and hug this book. Eeeep! After finishing it on one sitting, I so want to read it again. And I would be reading this again if it wasn't for the hundred books shouting at me to read/review them. Sigh. I promise soon.

The second Gamble book, Tempting The Player has got everything I want in a book. The sexy alpha male we all can't help but love, a loveable heroine, full of hilarious moments, unforgettable characters AND it's written by none other than my favourite author ever - Jennifer L. Armentrout. Seriously, what more can you ask for??

One of my most favourite romance storyline is when the relationship started off as fake and then the two characters gradually fall in love. There's just something about it that I love and I'm really glad that that's what happened with Chad and Bridget.

Guys, it was even BETTER than Tempting The Best Man. And God knows I loved that book to bits. I didn't really think that I would love Chad more than Chase, but after finishing this, oh holy hell I am SO in love with Chad now. Even more than I love Chase.

Chad and Bridget are definitely going in my Favourite Couples list. Seriously, I love this two so much! O.M.G. This book was HOT. If you read Tempting The Best Man, oh boy, you haven't seen anything yet. *fans self*

What I really liked is that we still got to see what's happening with Chase and Maddie (from TtBM!) and there was this hilarious scene between them four. I was giggling uncontrollably throughout the entire time!

The ending. *faints* My favourite part of the whole book. I think you know what I'm talking about. :)

Even though this book was really predictable (I think everyone knows what's going to happen in the end, right?), I still LOVED this book and if you guys haven't started this series, PLEASE buy them right now!! Tempting The Player is definitely my top adult book this year.

I am dying for the next and last Gamble Brothers book, Tempting The Bodyguard. I can't wait to read Chandler and Miss Gore's story - I would think their book would be the steamiest one ;)  I. CAN.NOT. WAIT.

The Gamble Brothers series
Tempting The Best Man (Chase's story), Tempting The Player (Chad's story) and Tempting The Bodyguard (Chandler's story - coming 2013)

Waiting On Wednesday (32)

INVISIBILITY
by Andrea Cremer & David Levithan

Invisibility

May 7th 2013
~ Philomel/Penguin ~

Stephen has been invisible for practically his whole life — because of a curse his grandfather, a powerful cursecaster, bestowed on Stephen’s mother before Stephen was born. So when Elizabeth moves to Stephen’s NYC apartment building from Minnesota, no one is more surprised than he is that she can see him. A budding romance ensues, and when Stephen confides in Elizabeth about his predicament, the two of them decide to dive headfirst into the secret world of cursecasters and spellseekers to figure out a way to break the curse. But things don’t go as planned, especially when Stephen’s grandfather arrives in town, taking his anger out on everyone he sees. In the end, Elizabeth and Stephen must decide how big of a sacrifice they’re willing to make for Stephen to become visible — because the answer could mean the difference between life and death. At least for Elizabeth.

Andrea Cremer! I love her writing! And I love her books (except for Bloodrose - I'm Team Ren!!!) but other than that, her books are some of my favourites. I find it funny that I like her side characters better than the main ones *coughCallacoughShaycough* and I can't wait to read this. I haven't read anything of David Levithan though
I don't like the title, I think it's just too simple and boring. They changed it from The Invisibility Curse. Hmmm

Cover Thoughts:

I love the way the title and the authors' names are layed out. And the colour scheme is very different and bright - it will stand out from the other YA books out there. And the fact that the guy is almost invisible and it clearly hints at the story. I like that the two main characters are hugging.

Review: Elixir - Jennifer L. Armentrout

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: November 27th, 2012
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Genre: YA, Paranormal/Urban Fantasy
Pages: 80
Source: Free from Publisher's site, but pre-ordered the paperback

DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T READ DEITY (Covenant #3) I'M WARNING YOU.

Aiden St. Delphi will do anything to save Alex.
Even if it means doing the one thing he will never forgive himself for.
Even if it means making war against the gods.

~ Just a short, mini review since this is only an 80-page novella :)  ~

When I learned that Jennifer will be writing a novella in Aiden's POV, I was like:

And can you blame me?? Aiden's one of my favorite YA boys and I couldn't wait to get inside his head. Also, after that line in the last page of Deity? I had to read Elixir NOW. I got up extra early on a Saturday for this (SATURDAY, who wakes up on a Saturday morning? Yeah that's right - ME!) and devoured this book in one sitting. Honestly, I wasn't suprised. It IS Jennifer after all. :)

Jennifer's books just keep on getting better and better. And I feel so sorry for those people who haven't read any of her books yet. DO IT NOW. There's a lot of action, romance (even though Alex is you-know-what here) and lots and lots of Humor with a capital H. My type of book.

Throughout reading this I had SO many emotions. SO MANYYYYYYYY. I want to spend all of my time living in this world. I didn't want to leave, didn't want ELIXIR to finish. For such a short novella, it's freaking spectacular and so right up there with Deity. So far, my best book of the month.

You guys know how much I think good guys are boring, right? Well, not true in this case. Aiden is anything but boring. He's definitely one of the swoonworthy guys in YA and he truly won me over in Elixir. If you tell me you're still Team Seth (I hate him!), we can't be friends anymore.

Aiden and Alex are just an AMAZING couple. Their love for each other just blows me away. Definitely one of my favourite couples. Hmm. Where can I find my own Aiden? ;)

There's so many awesome quotes in this! My all-time favourite quote:

“Love is such a wild and reckless creature. It cannot be planned or threaded. It cannot be controlled. Love can coexist with Fate, or it can undo it. Love is the only thing more powerful than Fate.”

Also awesome quotes:

“Did you know me then?” she asked sleepily.
“No.” I held her closer, as if I could somehow pull her inside me and keep her safe. “But I knew, in that moment, you were amazing.”

“Alex, you have to be in there. I know you. My
heart would not be beating if you were truly gone.”

If you guys haven't started this series yet, well, you are CRAZY. You don't have any idea on what you're missing out on.

A little note: The publisher put the free links for Elixir on their site, but many people were reading it out of order. But guys, in every blog post, it says DO NOT READ if you haven't read Deity. You would get spoiled. You would get pissed. But that's your responsibility.

July 9th 2013 from HarperTeen

About the cover - Author's name (Leigh Fallon)
I know, there's no mistaking it. This is definitely a Carrier Series  cover, but that was the intention. After the amazing reception to the  cover of Carrier of the Mark, HarperCollins wanted Shadow's cover to  be instantly recognizable. And it is, but the new darker color palette  reflects the darker tone that this installment brings, and the pink  and purple really make it pop. I love it and think HarperCollins have  done another amazing job. I hope you like it too.

Giveaway question:
What YA creature/genre would you want JLA to write about next?

Answers to my giveaway:

~ A LOT of you put angels/fantasy. If you didn't know, Jennifer also writes adult (as J. Lynn) and as a matter of fact, her adult books are about angels and fantasy. :)

~ *I* would love to see her write about YA contemporary romance (I know her upcoming 2014 book Don't Look Back is contemporary but it's more thriller like) and about mermaids. But I pretty much love all of her books so I'm not entirely picky :)

~ Best answer: from Kristin Macri - " I would love it if she wrote about trolls. There is so much an author can do with that. They don't have to be the stereotypical trolls. They could be beautiful and mysterious and control the elemental earth. I think that would be a fantastic read!

~  Also, pirates! Demons! Fairytale retellings! Let's face it, Jennifer can make any Prince Charming sexy! ;)

~ JLA said that she won't ever write about fey or werewolves. Just never her thing. Which I like because I'm not a fan of them either.

~Someone said that she could write about Greek Gods. Umm, go read her Covenant books :)

That's it from me, guys! Thank you all for entering my giveaway! And if you didn't win, Deity is only a few weeks away (best of the series so far!! read my review!) and Opal (well, I'm waiting with you on that one!) :D
