Creating Rachel
(guest post by author Katie McGarry)

In CRASH INTO YOU, my third young adult novel, I wanted to show that sometimes heartbreak is actually the catalyst a person needs to find true love. This is true for my main character, Isaiah.

As anyone who’s read my previous two books knows, Isaiah’s been in love with his best friend, Beth, for what feels like ages. In my first book, PUSHING THE LIMITS, we saw the lines blur in their complex relationship. In my second book, DARE YOU TO, Beth realized Isaiah was not the guy she was in love with. The scene where she confronted him with this revelation ripped out my heart.

From Beth’s point of view in DARE YOU TO as she confronts Isaiah:

I try to physically shake the tears forming, but his hold on my face makes it impossible. We haven’t talked for weeks, but I knew, in the deep recesses of my mind, that our separation was temporary. This somehow feels too real and that means this goodbye could be concrete. I can’t lose him. I can’t. “I mean it. I love you.”
Like a friend. Like my best friend. Before Groveton, I never understood love and now…I still don’t understand it. But I know that it’s not emptiness, I know it’s not letting a guy use me, I know there are different types and what I feel for Isaiah…it’s not how I feel when I’m with Ryan.
Isaiah rests his forehead on mine. “Like you love him. Tell me you love me as much as you love him.”

Isaiah had his heart utterly and completely broken in DARE YOU TO. So much so that when I wrote that scene, I was in tears and was unable to write anymore for that day.

I broke the heart of the character I had developed a huge crush on. At that moment, I hated myself.

Luckily, I was given a chance to heal Isaiah’s heart and this healing happens in CRASH INTO YOU.

I spent a long time creating the right girl for Isaiah. He is a complicated person so I knew that the girl who would challenge him would also be somewhat complicated.

She had to be tough, but Beth was tough, so I knew that the girl meant for Isaiah also needed to be outwardly vulnerable. I needed someone who would challenge Isaiah’s belief system that he was a street rat who would always be a street rat. For that reason, I made Isaiah’s new love interest come from an affluent family.

Isaiah, deep in his soul, felt like he never belonged anywhere and that is what I knew this new female character also had to feel. This would be the thing that would unite them when everything else on the outside said they were complete opposites.

So this is who I created: Rachel Young.

I made her a junior in high school and a year younger than Isaiah. She’s from one of the richest families in the state and attends private school. She’s beautiful, loves fast cars, and on the outside, she has the whole world dangling at her fingertips, but then I made her real.

Everyone has problems, no matter how much money they make. Rachel suffers from panic attacks, but she hides them from her family because she doesn’t want anyone to think she’s weak. Rachel is drawn to Isaiah because of his strength and after a night where Rachel keeps Isaiah from being arrested at a drag race, he’s drawn to her for the same reason.

Rachel doesn’t feel like she fits in at home or in her family’s world. Isaiah feels as if he will never belong with anyone.

One chance meeting, one moment of courage, and two lives are intertwined forever.

I can’t wait for everyone to see how Isaiah and Rachel’s story unfolds.

Review: Being Sloane Jacobs - Lauren Morill

Being Sloane JacobsTitle: Being Sloane Jacobs
Author: Lauren Morrill

Release Date: January 7th, 2013
Publisher: Delacorte
Age and Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Pages: 352
Source: bought

Meet Sloane Emily Jacobs: a seriously stressed-out figure-skater from Washington, D.C., who choked during junior nationals and isn’t sure she’s ready for a comeback. What she does know is that she’d give anything to escape the mass of misery that is her life.

Now meet Sloane Devon Jacobs, a spunky ice hockey player from Philly who’s been suspended from her team for too many aggressive hip checks. Her punishment? Hockey camp, now, when she’s playing the worst she’s ever played. If she messes up? Her life will be over.

When the two Sloanes meet by chance in Montreal and decide to trade places for the summer, each girl thinks she’s the lucky one: no strangers to judge or laugh at Sloane Emily, no scouts expecting Sloane Devon to be a hero. But it didn’t occur to Sloane E. that while avoiding sequins and axels she might meet a hockey hottie—and Sloane D. never expected to run into a familiar (and very good-looking) face from home. It’s not long before the Sloanes discover that convincing people you’re someone else might be more difficult than being yourself.

This book was just what I needed. After reading quite a lot of NA and Adult romances lately, I started to miss and want to read something that's a bit more light and fun and YA. BEING SLOANE JACOBS fulfilled my needs and more. It's one of those books you finish with a big stupid smile on your face and contains a message that I think is pretty relevant to today's teens.

First of, I love the storyline! If you love a bit of The Parent Trap plus hockey and ice-skating, you will fall in love with this book. While it will never happen in real life, it was hilarious to see and read about it here. Here we have two very different girls with only one common: they each play a sport and they share the same name. As they have family/other issues, they decided to go to a different summer camp, to pretend as each other and play their sport. How they handled it and their reactions were actually very realistic. They did NOT have an easy time, and they found out their judgemental thoughts about each other's sports were false.

We get both Sloane Emily and Sloane Devon's POV, which was awesome and really helped to develop and for the reader to distinguish between them. Personally, I prefer Sloane Emily more, maybe because she's more like me. The girly, more shy one that have a love for glittery stuff. Oh, and she also ice-skates. Sloane Emily's the more tomboy, laidback of the two and it was fun reading the scenes where she have to act all graceful and light (while ice-skating) and Sloane Emily having to wear more casual, dirty stuff while playing hockey. You can just imagine them in your head thinking, what the hell am I doing??

Of course, there's some family issues and all that drama, but I'm glad it didn't very much just focused on that particular aspect. The main focus was the two very lost young women trying to find out what they truly want and how they don't have to always follow everyone just to make them happy. There's a little bit of romance too, of course. Honestly, that's the one that I'm let down by the most. While it's not a major issue, I felt as though the two main love interests should have been more developed and that we get to spend more time with them. But, looking at the grand scheme of things, this is a very small detail. This is my first book by Lauren Morrill, and I can assure you I'll be looking out for her future ones! :)

Review: Legal Affairs - Objection by Sawyer Bennett

Legal Affairs, Vol. 1 - Objection (Legal Affairs, #1)Title: Legal Affairs, Vol 1 - Objection
Author: Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: December 26th, 2013
Publisher: Big Dog Books, LLC

Age and Genre: Adult, Romance

Pages:unknown

Source: for review

One year ago, I graduated from law school and embarked on a career as a purveyor of high priced legal shenanigans.

Six months ago, my boyfriend dumped me when I thought he might be proposing.

Two weeks ago, I got drunk and joined a secret sex club.

Two days ago, I had a torrid one-night stand with a stranger.
Today? Well, today I’m contemplating having an affair with my boss.

Matt Connover is all kinds of forbidden temptation wrapped up in a deliciously wicked package, and he’s made it clear… he’s only interested in sex.

My name is McKayla Dawson but everyone calls me Mac. I work at the powerhouse firm of Connover & Crown, LLP, where the law has never felt so hot.

But between you and me, I’m afraid my heart won’t survive these Legal Affairs.

Legal Affairs is a serial romance with a whole lot of hot and a little bit of funny. It has six volumes that will be released every two weeks, the first one, entitled Objection, on January 10, 2014.

If you read my latest blog posts, you'd know that I recently discovered Sawyer Bennett's AMAZING books and am totally obsessed with all of them! Well, this new start of a series is no different and I couldn't get enough of it. The only problem (well..it's not really a problem hehe) is that it's too short as it's part of a volume series and I wanted more. Nevertheless, Sawyer delivers yet again another really sexy, humorous story with lovable characters.

I don't know how she does it but Sawyer just creates the most delicious, hottest MEN ever. Matt Connover just got added to my Book Boyfriends list because he is just.YUM. The things he said and did..OMG. *fans self* Yeah. I wouldn't mind being McKayla.  :P And as for McKayla, I love this girl. She's a character that I loved reading about. Her inner dialogue is hilarious and damn she is seriously relatable. With these two main characters, you know you're just going to get something awesome. And Holy hell. Their interactions (the sexual tension, guys!!!) I couldn't get enough of and let me tell you know, there are some really hot scenes. Which, if you're like me, then you'd love. :)

This wasn't only focused on the two main characters, their jobs was also highlighted. I never read anything about the law/lawyers before and stuff but this was actually pretty interesting and I admittedly quite enjoyed it. Of course, the romance is centre stage but it was pretty cool too.

Now I'm just (impatiently) waiting for the next which will be published in two weeks. YAY!
For fans of Sawyer Bennett will most definitely won't be disappoint with this, and for those who haven't read other books by her, you MUST! This is one author and series you shouldn't miss.
