One & Only

One night they can't forget...

Tess McMann lives her life according to the secrets she's sworn to keep: the father who won't acknowledge her, the sister who doesn't know she exists, and the mother who's content playing mistress to a prominent businessman. When she meets the distractingly cute Dylan Kingsley at a prestigious summer program and falls in love, Tess allows herself to imagine a life beyond these secrets. But when summer ends, so does their relationship -- Dylan heads off to Canton College while Tess enrolls at the state university.

One love they can't ignore...

Two years later, a scholarship brings Tess to Canton and back into Dylan's life. Their attraction is as strong as ever, but Dylan has a girlfriend…who also happens to be Tess's legitimate half-sister. Tess refuses to follow in her mother's footsteps, which leaves her only one choice: break the rules she’s always followed, or allow Dylan to slip away for a second time.

...And only one chance to get things right

 AUTHOR GUEST POST

My Top 5 Favorite College TV Shows (And 5 That would have been better off without “the college years.”)

5. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: Does not, technically, take place in college. But there are significant flashbacks to the college experiences of former roommates Marshall, Lily, and Ted that are so vivid and important to the storyline that I’m going to go ahead and count it anyway. Who can forget Ted’s “Dr. X” misadventures, of the Fiero road trip that cemented Marshall and Ted’s forever friendship? And of course, there was Marshall and Lily’s first time (that poor Ted, trapped in the bunk bed, was also present for). My favorite, however, has got to be the “sandwiches.” (Hint, they aren’t sandwiches.)

4. VERONICA MARS: Ironically, the “college” season of this show is by far my least favorite of its three-season run. But that still sets a pretty high bar, and despite a somewhat rocky execution of this season there are still several high points: The guy who makes a living off selling tests, the campus rallying around the victims of the serial rapist, and of course, Wallace and Logan and the infamous “prison experiment.”

3. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (Season 4): This was actually the season when I first started watching Buffy, and I was in college at the time. It was one of my college roommates who initially introduced me to the show, turning me into a lifelong fan of Joss Whedon. Though Buffy and Co. Didn’t stay in college very long (there was world-saving and sister-protecting to do, after all) I appreciated their short experiment into collegial life, from ill-advised one night stands and haunted frat houses to evil professors and crappy roommates. Buffy might not have needed a BA, but it was good she gave the whole college experience a whirl.

2. GREEK: Whenever I find another fan (or even watcher) of this show, I go nuts with glee.  It beautifully captures all the ups and downs of the college experience — roommates, classes, boyfriends, parents, first loves. If any show is a New Adult, it’s this one. Angst, love, friendship, future, scientific rigor…. And oh yeah, Cappy!

1. COMMUNITY: I love this show. Weird, meta, surreal at times, but you can’t deny that it’s about a bunch of college students. Well, Jeff would probably try to deny it. And though most of them are well past the age of NA, Abed, Annie, and Troy are all right in the wheelhouse. I love how multicultural and multigenerational this show is. Also, it’s one of the funniest things on television.

And the five losers:

5. THE GILMORE GIRLS: taking the show out of Stars Hollow lost it 99% of its charm, and I’m saying that having attended Yale.

4. GOSSIP GIRL: Why did they even bother? So much as pretending these “kids” were going to go to college was a waste of time. Chuck Bass knew it; why didn’t the rest of them? Quick: tell me who dropped out last. See?

3. 90210: Who cares? Not 13 year old me, that’s for sure. I just went right on to Melrose Place, and they should have, too.

2. SAVED BY THE BELL, THE COLLEGE YEARS: Ditto. In fact, anything named “The College Years” is probably going to be pointless.  You’ve already killed your premise.

1. GLEE. Does this one even count? As of this writing, only two of the regular characters even made it to college (Quinn supposedly went to Yale, but we’ve only seen her once since then, and she claims she was sleeping with a professor) and one of those probably doesn’t even need to be at her Performing Arts institute of higher learning anymore, seeing as she already has a starring role on Broadway.
