Early Review: The Collector - Victoria Scott

The Collector (Dante Walker, #1)Title: The Collector (Dante Walker #1)
Author: Victoria Scott
Release Date: April 2nd, 2013
Publisher:  Entangled Teen
Genres: YA, Paranormal Romance, Comedy
Pages: 400
Source: Lottery draw/for review

He makes good girls...bad.
Dante Walker is flippin’ awesome, and he knows it. His good looks, killer charm, and stellar confidence has made him one of hell’s best—a soul collector. His job is simple, weed through humanity and label those round rears with a big, red good or bad stamp. Old Saint Nick gets the good guys, and he gets the fun ones. Bag-and-tag.

Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante’s an equal opportunity collector and doesn’t want it any other way. But he’ll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:

Collect Charlie Cooper’s soul within 10 days.

Dante doesn’t know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that’s a permanent ticket out of hell. But after Dante meets the quirky, Nerd Alert chick he’s come to collect—he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector, and uncover emotions deeply buried.

OMG OMG OMG. I have read THE COLLECTOR. After lusting for it for months now, I finally got to read it. When I got the email, I just screamed. Yep. And my parents thought I was getting attacked. Great. But the point is, you have NO idea how much I want this book. It's one of my top most anticipated books this year and not to mention, have a buttload of expectations for it! And it passed all of my ridiculously high expectations and more!Lemme tell you know, this book will be MASSIVE. I just know it. It seriously deserves all the hype surrounding it, that's for sure!

Paranormal romance is still my favourite YA genre and this just had everything that I would want in that kinda book. And Victoria Scott made her story so original and so captivating! Yes, we have the Hell and Heaven. And the demons and angels. BUT. The tiny creative things sprinkled in this book just made it one of the most unique and engaging stories ever. There's not one thing I would change about it. NONE. (Which is rare, guys.)

DANTE. Oh my. He can make me bad any time. Jesus, he's now my top book boyfriend (sorry, Daemon!) and I just want to cry coz he's not real. He's like my dream guy. Dark hair and blue eyes with such confidence and swagger. HIS SWAGGER. *dies* He has so many layers inside of him but what I love most is that he's a cocky hottie but with a very big heart. He cares, people. I love him when he's so naughty and funny, but what I loved the most is when we see him vulnerable and sweet. Along the way, you learn that he's got a few inner demons to fight on his own, and his insecurities just made me love him even more. I didn't even know that was possible, but yeah. I also very much enjoyed his narrative. Dante's voice is so hilarious! I was laughing in almost every page!

And now we have the girl. Charlie Cooper. (Can I just say how much I love the name Charlie? 'Cause I do). OH I JUST LOVE YA, GIRL. There's not a character like Charlie Cooper. First, she's really, and I mean really not your typical heroine. She's not physically perfect. Far from it. She's got glasses, rubbish hair, acne, limp, wonky teeth etc. And I want to hug her since I'm SO effing tired of reading about all these other heroines being beautiful, gorgeous, perfect. Oh, and another reason to love her: she's a nerd! And she's so sweet and gullible and charming and so kind it makes my heart hurt.

THE COLLECTOR is filled with action, humour (lots of it) and the best part, the romance. No one has better chemistry than Dante and Charlie. I loved reading about them slowly falling in love with each other, and you just realise that no other two people would work as well as them. Like Charlie said: 'Because I see you. Even though you try so hard, I see you anyway.' EXACTLY. You know, you can take a look at my FAVES blog page at the top, I'm pretty sure you'll see their names in most of the lists. :) There was a very special scene and OMG the wait was so worth it. Did I forgot to mention that this is a hot book? Whoa! *fans self*

Not only that, there's also a cast of very likeable and memorable characters. Annabelle and Blue! Max! Charlie's Grandma (who I have a crush on, by the way)! I grew to love each of these characters and I can't help but shed a tear or two when......Ok. I'll stop talking now. Don't want to give anything away.

Victoria Scott has definitely earned a spot in my all time favourite authors list. No doubt I would read everything that she will publish, and I just want to wish her the best since she sooooo deserves it! Her writing is just so addictive, I literally couldn't put my kindle down. I knew I was flying through this book but God help me I just couldn't stop myself! Now, if only I could read the sequel, The Liberator right now! This is part of a trilogy (Yayyyyyyyy!!!!!) but unlike other series, I was very satisfied with the ending of book one and GASP! It didn't end in an evil cliffhanger. But that doesn't mean that I'm not dying for the sequel. Because I am. A girl gotta have more Dante.

Oh, and Victoria, I want to hug you so much right now.

Love from your #1 VMafia soldier,

Jana (aka Dante's girlfriend, sorry Charlie!)

Psst. I should list why me and Dante are made to be.
- We both love the colour red. (screw purple)
- We both love bacon.
- We both hate cats.
AND...hmm I'll think of something later. :P

 THE LIBERATOR (DANTE WALKER #2)
by Victoria Scott

The Liberator (Dante Walker, #2)

September 2013

The official book blurb will be revealed spring 2013. In the meantime, here's a note from Author Victoria Scott:
Hey guys! While I can't reveal many details yet, I will say this book was enormously emotional to write. More action, new characters, higher stakes, and a whole lot of sexy. I hope you enjoy reading the next chapter of Dante Walker's story!

By the way, Dante wants me to tell you..."Things only get darker from here, doll. Might want to hold my hand for this."
Add to Goodreads

I've read The Collector two days ago and still thinking about it. Which is a pretty rare thing. Guys, The Collector is easily one of my favourite books of ALL TIME and Dante is now my top book boyfriend. I AM DYING for the sequel (which is out in September, yay!!) and I just know it will be better than this. :D

Tori, if you need someone to, you know, read this, you know where to find me. ;)

Cover Thoughts:

Don't have a cover yet, but I just have this feeling that it will be as hot and sexy as the cover for THE COLLECTOR.
So what do YOU think of my pick this week? And what are YOU waiting for this Wednesday? :)

Review: Easy - Tammara Webber

EasyTitle: Easy
Author: Tammara Webber
Release Date: January 3rd, 2013 (UK)
Publisher:  Penguin/Puffin (UK)
Genres: New Adult, Contemporary
Pages: 304
Source: For review

Easy is a New York Times Bestseller - a must-read for everyone who loves Slammed by Colleen Hoover and the New Adult genre. Deeply romantic and utterly gripping, this is not to be missed.

Jacqueline seems to have a knack for making the wrong choices. She followed her boyfriend to his choice of university, disregarding her preference. Then he dumped her. She chose a minor she thought she could combine with her music studies, but she's falling behind. And then, leaving a party alone one night, she is attacked. If it wasn't for the timely intervention of a stranger, she would have been raped. Now she must make a choice - give up and give in, or toughen up and fight on. Only the support of the man who is tutoring her and the allure of the guy who saved her from the attack convince her that it's worth fighting on. Will Jacqueline now have to make a choice between them too? And can she make the right decision? It's not easy . . .

I've heard about a million good things about this New Adult book EASY and lemme tell you right now. It exceeded all of my expectations and more.

I'm really loving this New Adult genre (I don't get what everyone's problem with it) and if you're digging NA, EASY is definitely a must-read. It deals with very realistic college life issues, and since I'm only 16 and there's still 2 years left before I go to college/uni, I found reading EASY (and other NA books) really interesting and sort of helps me understand this new life that I'll be having in a few years time. Kinda prepares me, to be honest.

I loved Jacqueline! Yes, she made such stupid mistakes (such as following her boyfriend to his college so they could be together) but you just can't help but sympathize and love her. She's definitely a strong and smart (at times) heroine.
Obviously we have to talk about the guy. We can't NOT talk about the love interest. Anyway, Lucas was a very three-dimensional character, he has so much layers inside him and learning more about him along the way with Jacqueline was never a boring moment. They had a LOT of chemistry. And the scenes with them were done beautifully.

This book deals with a very important issue. Rape. I admit, I was a bit hesistant about reading this book since I tend to shy away from that issue, it just makes me so uncomfortable and everything, but with the way author Tammara Webber executed this said topic, I didn't have any problems with it at all and it has a very positive message. I think every girl should read EASY. (The almost-rape happens in the first chapter, and I'm glad that douchebag got what he deserves in the end. Prick.)

I'll definitely be reading more of Tammara's work and I just hope it would be as captivating as EASY. I say it deserves all the hype it gets. :)

Blog Makeover!...(Well, kinda!)

Hey guys!

As you can see, my blog had a makeover. Well, nah not really. The colours are just lighter and more lilac-y. If that even make sense. Anyway, I hope you guys like it and if you have any thoughts about the new colour theme, I'd love to hear it on the comments below.

(I was going to change my complete design and have something different, but from the reaction that I got from Twitter made me just change the colours. I'm glad you guys like how the blog looks overall, but I just can't help not changing the theme colours. Hope you guys like! :)

I know this is a pretty random post but I also wanted to mark this day as the day it got changed. :)

July 2nd 2012 from Entangled Teen

My thoughts on cover: I think this has to be one of my favourite ever covers! I just love everything about it! I didn't really expect this to be as amazing or beautiful as I thought it would be. Definitely a hundred times better than Inbetween cover! And I want this book now! Cash was my favourite character and I love Anaya! <3 em="em">
Tara A. FullerABOUT THE AUTHOR: Tara Fuller writes novels. Some about grim reapers. Some about witches. All of course are delightfully full of teen angst and kissing. Tara grew up in a one stop light town in Oklahoma where once upon a time she stayed up with a flash light reading RL Stine novels and only dreamed of becoming a writer. She has a slight obsession with music and a shameless addiction for zombie fiction, Mystery Science Theater, and black and white mochas. Tara no longer lives in a one stop light town. Now she lives with her family in a slightly larger town in North  Carolina where they have at least three stoplights.

October 15th 2013 from Spencer Hill Contemporary

My thoughts on cover: *squeal* Isn't it gorgeous?? I'm so in love with the colours, it's like all of my favourite colours all put in one cover! It just makes me even more excited for this book! And the summary? EEEEEP. It sounds amazeballs already and hellloooo there's twin brothers!! Which means two equally super hot guys!! ;) This is the second book from the Spencer Hill imprint, Spencer Hill Contemporary. First is Camp Boyfriend (J.K Rock), then this Reclaimed (Sarah Guillory) and last Frigid (J. Lynn/JLA). Yay!!!

Sarah GuilloryABOUT THE AUTHOR:.
I am a reader. I love words and worlds and characters and, I will admit, that perfectly placed semi-colon. I love it when a sentence is so beautiful that I have to stop and re-read it several times because it is a nugget of truth written in a way I’d never thought before but is somehow the exact shade of right. I love characters who become real and worlds more vivid than my own. I love books, and I am a reader.
Which is also why I’m a writer and an English teacher. I teach sophomore English at a public high school, and sometimes I get very excited that they pay me to fan girl over books and authors and watch as one of my students falls in love with the written word – either for the first time or all over again with a new genre or author. I also sponsor the book club at our school, which means that once a month I get to sit around and discuss books (mostly YA) with teens. I really do love my job.
I live in Louisiana with my adorable husband and equally adorable but ridiculously spoiled bloodhound. I run marathons in order to stay at least partially sane. I love fall and football and rain. And books. Have I mentioned that I am ridiculously addicted to books?

Review: The Dead and Buried - Kim Harrington

The Dead and BuriedTitle: The Dead and Buried
Author: Kim Harrington
Release Date: January 1st 2013
Publisher:  Scholastic Point
Genres: Young Adult, Horror, Mystery
Pages: 304
Source: Bought

A haunted house, a buried mystery, and a very angry ghost make this one unforgettable thriller.

Jade loves the house she's just moved into with her family. She doesn't even mind being the new girl at the high school: It's a fresh start, and there's that one guy with the dreamy blue eyes. . . . But then things begin happening. Strange, otherworldly things. Jade's little brother claims to see a glimmering girl in his room. Jade's jewelry gets moved around, as if by an invisible hand. Kids at school whisper behind her back like they know something she doesn't.

Soon, Jade must face an impossible fact: that her perfect house is haunted. Haunted by a ghost who's seeking not just vengeance, but the truth. The ghost of a girl who ruled Jade's school — until her untimely death last year. It's up to Jade to put the pieces together before her own life is at stake. As Jade investigates the mystery, she discovers that her new friends in town have more than a few deep, dark secrets. But is one of them a murderer?

This book doesn't have anything new or original but that isn't what kept me reading. Kim Harrington's writing is just so addictive and unputdownable that I just couldn't stop. Yes, we've seen the 'new girl comes to a new town and her house is haunted' story about a billion times but Kim just somehow makes it different. In a really, really good way.

Jade was a very likeable character. She's very smart and brave, but also has a lot of flaws. I think she's the only character in this book that I actually liked and connected with. I found some of the other characters kinda stereotypical and ones that you see everyday in a high school setting.

Some would say there's a love triangle but I have to disagree. We don't really spend too much time with either guys (the lack of chemistry and romance in this book kills me!) and the romance is just on the side. I never did like both of the guys since they weren't really that developed or interesting.

Don't you just hate it when 50% in and you already had guessed who the killer was? So annoying! What I like about horror/mystery books is that it keeps me guessing and I even more love it when I get my guesses wrong and then BAM! The killer just appears on the page and I kick myself for not seeing it sooner. But but but...... that's what I love about it. Granted, it's not really the author's fault that I guessed it way earlier than I should have, but still.

The ghost scenes were written really well! I admit I'm such a wimp and I regretted reading this at night but you guys, I recommend this to anyone who's a fan of Kim Harrington (I do love her other YA series more but I still enjoyed this loads) and lovers of mystery and horror!

2013 Debut Author Interview: Kimberly Ann Miller

Every Friday here at The Book Goddess blog, I will be featuring one 2013 debut author and interview them about their upcoming book. If you want to take a look at the past interviews, go HERE.

About the author of TRIANGLES!
Kimberly Ann MillerKimberly Ann Miller received Bachelor's degrees from Georgian Court University and Rutgers University and a Master's degree from The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She is an avid reader and particularly enjoys true crime and young adult novels. She grew up in New Jersey and currently resides in Monmouth County with her husband and three cats. When she’s not writing, she loves to travel to sunny islands where she snorkels by day and stargazes by night. She always takes her Nook with her.

TRIANGLES by Kimberly Ann Miller - debuting June 18th 2013 from Spencer Hill Press
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Triangles

A beautiful island. Two sexy guys. What could possibly go wrong?

In the Bermuda Triangle—a lot.

Hoping to leave behind the reminders of her crappy life--her father's death years ago, her mother's medical problems, and the loser who’s practically stalking her--seventeen-year-old Autumn Taylor hops on a ship with her sister for a little distraction. When she wakes up in the Bermuda Triangle, she fears she's gone nuts for more than one reason: that loser’s suddenly claiming they're a happy couple... a hot guy is wrapping his arms around her and saying "Happy Anniversary"... and suddenly, she’s full of bruises, losing her hair, and getting IV medication. Autumn visits the ship's doctor, hoping for a pill or a shot to make the craziness go away. Instead, she's warned that these "alternate realities" could become permanent.

She just has to ask herself one question—how the hell is she going to get out of this mess?
AUTHOR INTERVIEW with KIMBERLY ANN MILLER!

1. Describe your book in 5 words.
Romantic. Mysterious. Intriguing. Intense. Flirtatious.

2. Your book TRIANGLES is slated for release in 2013. Is there anything more you can tell us about the story or the characters? And what kind, if any, research did you have to do?
Here is the blurb from Spencer Hill Press’s website:
A cruise ship.

I didn’t have to do any research! I’ve been on several cruises and I’ve been to Bermuda several times. And since the Bermuda Triangle remains a mystery, I made up the alternate realities as one of the many possible things that could happen while traveling through the Bermuda Triangle.

3. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started? What was your publishing journey like?
Actually, writing was not something I considered when I was younger. I always enjoyed reading, but in November 2008, my sister made me read the Twilight saga. Prior to that, I had never read anything YA, even as a teen myself. But I loved the story and the characters so much, I decided that I would like to write a book that others could enjoy as much as I enjoyed Twilight. I bought a few how-to books, picked up a netbook, and started writing! As for publishing Triangles, I queried agents and pitched the book on contests and got some requests, but no offers. Then, I entered a query contest on Kate Kaynak’s blog (the Lead Editor at Spencer Hill Press). She liked my query and asked that I query Spencer Hill Press when they opened to submissions last December. I queried them December 1, got the manuscript request Dec 4, and got the offer to publish on Feb 21, 2012! They are an amazing company to write for. I love them all! So, my journey has been great!

4. How did your main character Autumn Taylor come to life? What was the inspiration behind her and do you have any quirks or hobbies similar to hers?

I got the idea for her name from a Christening I was at and jotted it down. Her story started out as something different, but when the theme of the Bermuda Triangle and alternate realities hit me, I reworked that into the story. Once I knew where Autumn was going, she took over the story! What inspired me to write about the Bermuda Triangle is my love for Bermuda. It's one of the safest, cleanest, nicest islands I've travelled to. The people are amazing, the sights rock, and the weather is perfect. Plus, they have the Bermuda Triangle!

Regarding similarities between Autumn and myself, hmmm…we both love reading, traveling, cats, chai, and Jersey pizza. Other than that, we are both individuals!

5. I'm really into books with strong romantic elements, is there anything you can tell us about the romance in your book?
There’s a lot of it! And not only one, but two hot guys, Joey and Marcus! Let’s just say Autumn gets a ‘taste’ of each of them, and has different experiences with each of them. It was really fun to write those scenes, too!

6. What made you decide to write a Young Adult book? And why the Bermuda Triangle?
I love YA because the teen years are the most emotional times of our lives. Everything is so new and raw, and we experience so many ‘firsts’ that we can never get back—first kiss, first love, first job, first taste of independence. I would never want to go through it again, but the memories last a lifetime and are some of the best! See above about the Bermuda Triangle!

7. As a reader, what is most important to you, the characters or the plot? And as a writer, is it different?
As both a reader and a writer, I have to like the characters and care about their journey to get invested in the story. But an interesting plot is a must, also. So, both!

8. Aside from TRIANGLES coming out June 18, what else can we expect from you? New books, new projects?
I have already submitted the first companion novel to Triangles to Spencer Hill Press. It’s currently being evaluated. The plan is to have a different set of characters go through the Bermuda Triangle and their own alternate realities with each book. I also have a middle grade novel on submission about three young teens discovering stranded aliens on an island, and I’m working on a YA contemporary.

9. What other books are you really looking forward to read in 2013?
Wow, there are so many! One of my favorite authors is Jennifer Armentrout, and I’m dying for the next books in both her Covenant and Lux series. Spencer Hill Press has several interesting titles coming out, and I’m dying for Book Expo America in June to get my hands on some great ARCs. I found a lot of new authors to admire through the books I got at Book Expo in 2012 and I’m sure 2013 won’t be any different.

10. OMG! I love JLA too, as you all know! And SHP does have amazing interesting titles coming out this year :) And finally, what message would you want readers of TRIANGLES to take away from the story?

First and foremost, I want them to enjoy the story as a fun escape from reality! But throughout the book, Autumn discovers a lot about herself. Her journey of self-discovery is a major theme in Triangles, and she learns that by facing her fears, she becomes a stronger person.

Me: Eeeep. I don't know about you guys but this book just sounds so amazeballs! I'm dying for this book and hopefully we'll get the arcs soon! :)

Check back next Friday for our next author interview, Laura Lam (author of PANTOMIME, Jan. 2013!)

Review: Altered - Jennifer Rush

Altered (Altered, #1)Title: Altered (Altered #1)
Author: Jennifer Rush
Release Date: January 1st 2013
Publisher:  Little, Brown & Co
Genres: Young Adult, Thriller, Sci-fi
Pages: 336

When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.
Ok, I admit. I admit that I was only interested in this book because of the cover. I mean, have you SEEN it? I may or may not have drooled over it. And I was such a happy girl when I read this book and found out that this cover is actually pretty relevant. Which is quite rare these days. *Clears throat* Anyway, I didn't have any idea about this book before starting it and am so glad I didn't because then that way I got to experience everything about its awesomeness. Ha!

There's not one hot boy in this book. Oh no. Instead, we get FOUR hot boys. I know right! I mean, what did we do to get such four sexy guys in a book together? I think Jennifer Rush may have read my mind and therefore granted my wish. Hehe.

You'd think that you would have trouble remembering which boy is which and their personalities but it was actually surprisingly easy to. Cas is my favourite and the funny one, Nick's the hot asshole, Trev's the smart one, and Sam..well, he's the boring one. I KNOW. It makes me want to cry because I don't really get why Anna is so in love with Sam and in my opinion, he's like..so boring and has no personality whatsoever. Now, give me Cas and Nick anytime. YUM.

This book is filled with very shocking twists. There were several moments when I was like 'WHAT?' or 'DID THAT JUST HAPPEN?' and each twist was really clever and well done. I would never in a million years would have guessed any of the twists in this book. There was one where I was really sad about because I just didn't really expect it and it just makes my heart hurt for all of them. :(

This book was very fast paced and filled with so much action and suspense. You'd be crazy not to read ALTERED in one go because I just couldn't put this book down. There's always something going on (but not in a way that is tooo much) and you never know which direction the author will take you in.

I feel like this kinda genre is very popular right now and there's a lot of books that has 'genetically altered' people or 'a secret organization doing secret evil stuff' but I have to say, ALTERED really stands out on its own and I highly recommend it to people who love hot boys (I mean, who doesn't??) and sci-fi thrillers.
