Ten Things I’ve Learned from the One Week Girlfriend series by Monica Murphy

When I started writing ONE WEEK GIRLFRIEND, I knew Drew + Fable’s story would consist of two books, but I had no plans beyond that. I was only in the here and now while writing the first book and then when I wrote SECOND CHANCE BOYFRIEND.

My life has changed tremendously since I wrote OWG. I’ve learned a lot from this journey, these characters, the books and everyone who supported them. Here’s a top ten list of my discoveries:

1. Bloggers are amazing, supportive people. I don’t care if it’s a huge blog with tons of followers or a small one with a handful of readers, they are all so supportive and enthusiastic. Seriously, without them I would be nothing.

2. Readers are pretty damn awesome too. Without them I would be nothing as well. It’s so cool to receive emails, messages, tweets, etc. from readers saying how much they enjoyed the books. I can be having a bad day but when a reader reaches out to me, it makes me smile and turns my day around.

3. Word of mouth is something that’s never happened to me before. I’ve been writing for years. I’ve had books do well. But I never had something take off as fast as OWG and I know that was because of good old fashioned word of mouth. Mostly on Goodreads and Facebook. I know a lot of people are scared of Goodreads or hate that place because they feel like it’s full of negativity but overall I love it. Yeah, I have bad reviews on GR but that’s okay. Everyone’s entitled to their opinions…

4. Drew + Fable taught me about epic, overwhelming, all consuming love. Those two are ridiculously in love with each other and though sometimes I’d be writing and think, ‘Oh man, that was some straight up corny goofiness I just wrote,’ readers eat it up. I just thought it was corny because somehow, I became the somewhat jaded romance writer. Not anymore peeps. I embrace the corniness! I love the all consuming love!

5. Readers become invested in characters and consider them friends…even family. If you as a writer offer them constant glimpses of certain characters, they love it. I love it as a writer and a reader. Those characters matter to me, again both as a reader and a writer. I’ve never created something like that before and I did with the OWG series. It’s been…awesome.

6. The indie author community is so supportive and inspiring. I’ve made so many friends since “becoming” Monica Murphy and I’m so thankful to have those wonderful people in my life.

7. Hitting the USA Today and New York Times bestselling list was a huge thrill and one I will never, ever forget. The song Heart Attack by Demi Lovato was playing when I was driving my daughter to dance class and I learned via text that SECOND CHANCE BOYFRIEND hit the NYT. I about had a heart attack when I read that text! Talk about an awesome memory.

8. Participating in various book signing events over the last year has been so much fun. Meeting readers, talking to them, laughing with them, I can’t thank them enough for their support and their smiles.

9. Tackling the hard subjects in my writing has been difficult sometimes, but rewarding too. Life is tough people. I know we want to escape when we read but a dose of reality, of watching characters suffer mightily only to get their happily ever after in the end, is pretty rewarding.

10. I am so incredibly thankful for Drew + Fable to have come into my life. Without them we would have no Jen…no Colin…no Chelsea…and no Owen. Fable has been with me for five years (a different incarnation but yep, I wrote a horrible little YA attempt in 2009 about a girl named Fable Maguire) and I’m so thankful she stuck around, patiently waiting for me to tell her story. I hope you’re thankful for that stubborn little Fable too.
